HOW DO YOU PICK PLAYERS - Upside or Ready to Go !!
2 Kids walk into your grade 6 boys basketball tryout the first kid you know very well his game is refined he has experience on your team for a number of years he's your typical middle school rep player knows what he's doing and he's going to do what you tell him he wont harm you and get better each year .. (nice kid we like this kid most kids are like this)
2nd kid you don't know as well in fact have never set eyes on him before however within the first 10 min of practice/Tryout you can see this kid is a great athlete speed/strength natural co-ordination however not a basketball player yet this may be his first Rep experience or tryout it may take months to get this kid up to speed however he can play Rep defense today and rebound tomorrow and may become one of your best players in the near future if you keep him..
What typically happens in this situation with one spot remaining in most OBA clubs they 80% of the time pick kid #1 because he is easier to work with and its a safe pick but he's not the development pick in our opinion lesser athlete, less immediate high level upside yes kid #2 takes more patients and work initially but why keep a kid that you can see and end to his high level development and cut a kid with 3x the potential that is the issue and the crime in developing young players who do you choose to work with and why..
Often kid #2 will end up on the B Team to develop with other lesser players but often with that choice by the club or coach that potential high level player is exposed to less competition and coaching that is not on the A team level this actually may slow this kids development.
If you really want to kick your team up a notch mix great athletes with smart players even if it is painful at first great athletes will catch up to HIGH IQ players at the youth level quicker than you think .. but you cant suddenly make HIGH IQ players suddenly great athletes its a fine line building a team and developing players..
