Shay Colley, a 5-foot-8 guard from Canada - Signs with University of South Carolina

Staley gets commitment from Canadian guard

Dawn Staley picked up a commitment from guard Shay Colley on the next-to-last day of the early signing period on Tuesday.
Shay Colley, a 5-foot-8 guard from Canada, caught Staley’s eye when she coached against her during the summer. Colley led the Canadians with 16 points during a 104-74 gold medal-game loss to Staley’s USA U18 national team.
Colley is from Brampton, Ontario, and led the U18 Canadian team with 12.8 points per game during the FIBA Americas tournament this summer. She was also considering Pittsburgh and Syracuse.
USC received Colley's signed letter-of-intent on Wednesday. “We welcome Shay to our Gamecock family,” Staley said in a statement. “She has had an outstanding high school career along with her Canadian national team experience. She brings instant scoring to our team, but equally important is her defensive presence on the floor. Gamecock Nation will be very excited to see Shay hit the floor next season.”
South Carolina currently has one open scholarship and will have three more at season’s end, when seniors Aleighsa Welch, Elem Ibiam and Olivia Gaines depart. Staley has generally preferred to keep a roster of 10-13 players and has 12 returnees for next year, with Colley making 13.
Staley may try to add a junior-college post player during the spring signing period.
