Carleton Ravens guard Philip Scrubb skips NBA draft
It has always been Philip Scrubb’s dream to play in the NBA.
But the Carleton Ravens star point guard won’t get his shot – at least not this summer.
Scrubb has decided not to register in this year’s NBA draft and wants to use his fifth and final year fine tuning his skills at Carleton and possibly win a fifth national championship.
“I just felt that I probably, realistically, wasn’t going to be picked as high or picked at all just based on my past season and coming out of the CIS,” Scrubb told Metro Monday.
He is aware that it will be a lot tougher to turn NBA heads if he doesn’t get a shot at a training camp this summer, but the point guard who won his third straight Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) most outstanding player award this spring when his Ravens won their 10th national title, is willing to take that chance.
“Coming out of the CIS, it’s obviously going to be a lot tougher than if I was playing in the NCAA,” said Scrubb. “It’s going to take a lot of hard work and, obviously I have got to have a better individual season next year and our team has got to be playing at a pretty high level for some schools to notice me.”
Director of Basketball Recruiting and National Scout at North Pole Hoops Tariq Sbiet said Scrubb’s decision to stay at Carleton for one more year is a good one. He doesn’t think Scrubb would have been drafted this year, not because of a lack of talent, but because the star guard just isn’t on the NBA radar just yet.
“A high majority of Americans don’t even know what the CIS is, so just by that alone, I think he would be at a disadvantage,” said Sbiet. “A lot of things would have to align.”
