Does Being a former Player make you a Better Coach vs a Non Player Coach

COACHING WHO IS BETTER - PLAYER OR NON PLAYER ?

The question of if a Coach is qualified or even knows what he or she is doing often comes up in all youth sports however in Youth Basketball in the GTA this question comes up so often it is ridiculous. Most of the Coaches are volunteer and are certified under the OBA which allows them to coach "Your" children are they NCAA level coaches NO... are they career Coaches probably not as most of them are working people giving there free time.

Back to the topic at hand are you a better coach because you played in College or High School
compared to a person who never played but loves the game and studies the game ?

The truth is having played gives you an in game perspective of the game however it is not necessary in being a good coach and teaching kids how to play the game .. as a former player you may know what the player is going through individually however coaching a team is different than coaching and individual and that is where a former player may have an advantage over a non-player coach.

Great Coaches have a plan with goals and a method of achieving goals consistently being a former player does not guarantee you will get a coach with a plan or the skill to achieve results for your team or children. People who use this excuse to marginalize other coaches are not being fair or making sense as many coaches NBA or NCAA have never played the game at a high level yet they are able to coach successfully.. Making it really comical when Coaches at the Youth Level often use this point to put down other coaches.

If you have only played High School Basketball regardless of if you were a star or not you really don't have a clue of the difference from High School to CCAA/CIS/NCAA and beyond there are maybe 2 million things about Basketball your High School Coach failed to teach you about the game you still need to study the game your High School knowledge will not carry you far vs any coach who really knows the game. Most of the Coaches who Coach in the OBA have played some basketball High School being the majority if not less which is fine so long as Coaches are not acting as if the grade 9-12 careers are all you need to understand the game.

Study the game / watch video / go to clinics / plan your practices / know the game
