Kedar Wright named to the Canada West All-Rookie Team
EDMONTON – UBC's Kedar Wright was named to the Canada West All-Rookie Team after an impressive first season for the Thunderbirds.
Wright, a native of Toronto, ON, averaged eight points per game in 27 games this season while playing on average just over 20 minutes a game. He got better with every game and was one of the best players in the 'Birds three game playoff series versus Alberta, averaging 18 points a game, including a season high 28 points in game two.
Jordan Baker, a fifth-year Golden Bear, earns the first Player of the Year recognition for Alberta since Alex Steele in 2007-08, and the fifth in program history.
Originally from Edmonton and a graduate of Harry Ainlay high school, he had an incredible season in his final year of CIS eligibility. Returning to the court after missing the second half of the 2013 season with a debilitating back injury, Baker set the U of A record books on fire and firmly established himself as one of the greatest players in the history of Golden Bears basketball. By the end of the 2013-14 season, Baker owned 10 U of A career conference records, including most points (1,698), most rebounds (907), most assists (333) and most steals (200).
The former Canada West rookie of the year (2009-10) led Alberta in scoring, and finished sixth in Canada West with a 17.6 points per game average. He also finished third in rebounding, by hauling in 8.2 per contest, fifth in steals, 10th in field goal percentage (.498), 14th in assists and 13th in blocks.
A former CIS first team all-Canadian (2012), Baker also finished 19th in the country in scoring, and seventh in the nation in rebounds.
In 2013-14, Baker was the catalyst for Alberta as they marched to a conference leading 20-2 record, as well as the CIS No.3 ranking. In the past, Baker has attended camps with the Canadian National Men's team, and he helped Canada to a silver medal at the 2009 Summer Universiade.
"Jordan has been improving all season long, a testament to his unbelievable work ethic and desire to be the best he can be," observed Alberta head coach Barnaby Craddock. "Although very skilled, his motor is always on high when he's on the court, and his dedicated work ethic sets an example every night of how this game should be played". Jordan has raised the level of play in the Canada West conference, and is an unbelievable ambassador for the University of Alberta as well as CIS basketball."
Golden Bears forward Mamadou Gueye is the second consecutive Golden Bears rookie to earn the honour following Youssef Ouahrig, and the fifth in program history.
Gueye, who is originally from Quebec City, played in all 22 of Alberta's games, averaging 18.4 minutes per game, and was the third-highest scorer (213 total points and a 9.7 points per game average) on the Bears roster. He also hauled in 94 total rebounds, 31 steals and eight blocks, all of which are also the third-highest totals on the team, and had the 12th best field goal percentage in Canada West at .485.
The 6-6 forward helped the nationally ranked Golden Bears to a Canada West 20-2 record.
"In his first season as a Golden Bear, Mamadou has excelled at the difficult task of gelling with and making positive contributions to a senior laden roster," said Bears head coach Barnaby Craddock. "By working hard and buying into his role as a rookie, Mamadou has made a significant contribution to our team's success, while showing he has a very bright future ahead of him with the Golden Bears basketball program".
Third-year Victoria Vike Reiner Theil has been named the Defensive Player of the Year.
The 6-4 guard from West Vancouver B.C. played in all 22 games for the Vikes this season, helping the nationally ranked squad to a 19-3 regular season record and first-place Pacific Division finish.
Theil collected the highest average floor time on the Vikes roster at 30.4 minutes per-game this season, while averaging third on the Vikes in rebounds with 4.8 per-game. Theil was also fifth in scoring for the Vikes with 159 points through 22 games. During Victoria's Nov. 30 game against the Trinity Western Spartans, the defensive specialist broke out for a season-high 22 points that included four field goals from beyond the arc.
"Reiner is a very deserving winner," said Vikes head coach Craig Beaucamp. "For the past two years he has been the leader of our team defence. There is no statistic that recognizes individual defense, great defenders are motivated by their competitiveness and to their commitment to the team's ultimate goal which is 'to win'."
CIS Ken Shields Award nominee as Top Student-Athlete, Jasper Moedt has come a long way in his six years at University of the Fraser Valley, both as an offensive and defensive standout on the court and as a leader and advocate in the community. Moedt managed a 3.71 GPA in the fall semester of 2013, while competing with the Cascades and working 20 hours a week for a regional health program (Fraser Health) that strives to change negative perceptions surrounding mental health issues. He is an achiever, a competitor, and a phenomenal power forward, as well as great supporter of his teammates and his university.
The list of titles Moedt has accumulated this season in his athletic and academic ventures is almost too long to mention. He has been a student ambassador for UFV Student Services, the organizer of the Cascades' first ever Mental Health Night, the president of the UFV Student-athlete Association, and a student ambassador for CIS Student-athlete mental health initiatives.
Of course, Moedt is also a Cascades starter, averaging 14.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game this season. He is a 2013-2014 Canada West All-Star, and anchored the UFV defense to a 14 game regular season winning streak, playing at least 32 minutes in every game but one.
Moedt will graduate from UFV this semester with a bachelor's degree in Criminology.
"Jasper is very deserving of this award," said Cascades head coach Adam Friesen. "He has exemplified what a student-athlete is all about through his achievements in the classroom, community and on the court."
Craig Beaucamp from the Victoria Vikes has been named Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his 11-year career. Beaucamp, a previous Canada West Coach of the Year recipient in 2004, 2005, 2012 and 2013 led the Vikes to a 19-3 regular season record in 2013-14. The Vikes finished with the top-scoring defence in Canadian Interuniversity Sport following a regular season where they averaged 60.2 points per game.
In the Canada West quarter-finals Beaucamp's squad rallied to win the series and advanced to the conference Final Four in Edmonton.
"For Coach Beaucamp to be recognized as the Coach of the Year for three consecutive years clearly shows the respect his coaching colleagues have for the job Craig has done in guiding our Vikes to consistently high conference standings in each of those years," said Clint Hamilton, Director of Vikes Athletics and Recreation.
A native of Burnaby, B.C., Beaucamp continues to be active coach in the Victoria community, assisting with the Vikes TLC Camps for kids as well as the Vikes Basketball Academy. In 2011, Beaucamp served as an assistant coach with Canada's men's Pan-American Games team that competed in Guadaljara, Mexico.
